The latest addition to our New Zealand made range, our 100% Cotton Sheets have been designed with the customer in mind, both in comfort and usability.

Sizing: Modern mattresses are much deeper and a lot of Sheets aren't designed for them. This means it can be hard to pull that final corner of your fitted sheet or you're arguing over the top sheet that barely goes over the sides.

Our Sheets have been designed to solve these problems. Our fitted sheets have extra depth to fit over deep mattresses, and our top sheets are more generous in size to provide sufficient drape and coverage.

Our fabric is preshrink so it has less than 3.0% shrinkage on washing and drying. We also make the sheets and pillow cases 3.0% larger than our specified size as an allowance for this.

We recommend to wash and dry sheets before first use and they will fit perfectly and will do for the lifetime of the sheets.

You might wonder, what sets our sheets apart from the rest? The answer lies in the science of the cotton, yarns, fabric and weaving and construction. Let’s break it down for you.

Understanding Eiderdown cotton sheets True Thread Count

Thread count refers to the number of vertical (warp) and horizontal (weft) threads in a square inch of fabric. Thread count is one of the leading criteria used as a benchmark for a fabrics quality. While a higher thread count is often perceived as indicative of softer and better quality sheets, many manufacturers employ misleading practices to inflate this number.

They may use multi-ply threads, where two or more strands are twisted together, counting each strand as a separate thread. For instance, a three-ply thread labelled as 1200 thread count should actually be considered 400 thread count. That is why Eiderdown only use single ply yarn.

Additionally, measuring methods can differ by country; in New Zealand and Australia, thread count is often measured in a 10 x 10cm area.

The reason 10 x 10cm is used rather than international standard of per square inch is because it gives a considerably higher thread count (upwards of 25 %), giving the impression it’s a higher quality fabric which of course it’s not.

At Eiderdown we only specify thread count in per square inch so you know it’s a "true thread count" and not some hyped up number.

Sateen Weave

This 100% cotton fabric is made with a satin weave that gives it a silky-smooth feel. Sateen for sheets is woven in a one-over, three-under pattern for a stronger, more lustrous fabric.

Eiderdown  sateen weave matched with extra-long staple cotton is considered the best combination for luxury sheets. Sheets made with extra-long staple cotton and thread counts between 500 and 1000 provide the softest and smoothest texture

Why We Use Long-Staple Cotton and Single-Ply Yarn

At Eiderdown, we prioritize the use of long-staple cotton and single-ply yarn due to their exceptional qualities, ensuring the highest quality in our cotton fabrics.

Long-Staple Cotton Benefits

Long-staple cotton produces the longest, strongest, and finest fibres available, making it superior for textile fabric production.

• Stronger Yarns: Longer fibres can be spun into robust, fine yarns.
• Superior Weaves: This results in extremely smooth and supple fabrics, like the sateen weaves we offer.

In contrast, shorter cotton fibres can protrude from the weave, resulting in a coarser and weaker fabric. This reinforces our belief that when it comes to cotton, a longer staple truly is a better staple.

Single-Ply Yarn Advantage

We exclusively use single-ply yarn because it produces the finest and strongest threads. Only long-staple cotton can be spun into single-ply yarn, resulting in light, soft, yet extremely long-lasting sheets.

Conversely, multi-ply yarns consist of weaker fibres twisted together to create false strength. These yarns often use lower-grade, shorter-staple cottons, resulting in thicker, coarser, and heavier threads. Thicker yarns limit the number of threads that can be woven into one square inch, leading to a lower thread count and a bulkier fabric.

By choosing long-staple cotton and single-ply yarn, we ensure our products deliver unparalleled quality and comfort.

In simple terms, longer fibres create finer yarn, allowing for a higher thread count and a smoother feel. Eiderdown 1000 thread count fabric is intended to be fine and luxurious, and the quality of the cotton, fabric weight, and feel of the fabric are the important indicators of quality

High thread counts require long staple fibres, which produce finer, smoother, and stronger yarns which is exactly why Eiderdown uses 80 and 120 Cotton count yarns. The higher the number, the finer the yarn.

Superior performance to pilling

All Eiderdown cotton sheet fabrics achieve a minimum grade of 4 on the Martindale pilling test. This standardized test evaluates how effectively a fabric resists pilling, the formation of small, fuzzy balls on the surface. It’s a widely recognized method in the textile industry, especially for assessing the durability and quality of fabrics used in upholstery, clothing, and bed linens.

Higher scores on the test indicate better resistance to pilling, which results in longer-lasting, better-looking fabrics.
